A bug was fixed in EPIMAP.EXE/EPIMAP64.EXE, BOUNDARY.EXE/BOUND64.EXE and INSTALL.EXE. Specific changes/bug fixes are as follows: A. All programs (listed above) failed when executed on PCs running at 900 MHZ and higher. This was a TurboPower problem that has been fixed. 2. What's new in Epi Map, version 2.01? --------------------------------------- Primarily, a small number of bugs were fixed in EPIMAP.HLP (the help file), EPIMAP.EXE/EPIMAP64.EXE and BOUNDARY.EXE/BOUND64.EXE. Specific changes/bug fixes are as follows: A. EPIMAP.HLP - An error was fixed on page 36 (new SEND switch for SummaSketch II). B. EPIMAP.EXE/EPIMAP64.EXE - A problem with digitizer communication was fixed. A Problem with mouse movement (only in Windows NT) was fixed. C. BOUNDARY.EXE/BOUND64.EXE - The closing screen displays ("End BOUNDX Program" and "End BOUNDARY Program", respectively) were changed to "End BOUNDARY Program" and "End BOUND64 Program," respectively. 3. What is Epi Map 2? --------------------- Version 1.0 released: April 1993 Version 1.01 released: June 1994 Version 2.0 released: December 1995 Version 2.01 released: January 1997 Epi Map is a program for IBM-compatible microcomputers that displays data using geographic or other maps. Data values may be entered from the keyboard or supplied in Epi Info or dBASE files. The data may be counts, rates, or other numeric values. In Color/Pattern maps, the values are represented as shading or color patterns for each geographic entity. In Dot Density maps, randomly placed dots proportional in number to the values are placed in each entity. Epi Map also produces Cartograms, in which the value for each geographic entity is allowed to control the size of the entity. Outline maps are supplied with Epi Map and others can be created or edited within Epi Map. A complete map can be traced from a transparency in less than an hour in many cases--with less trouble than locating a suitably digitized "ready-made" map. The text of the Epi Map Manual is contained in the help file accessible from Help () on the main menu. Copies may be printed in plain text format as described in the section below on "Printing the Help File/Manual," or, with illustrations and better typography, from a Microsoft Word (Version 6) file available via the Internet (see below). Epi Map is designed to work independently or as a companion to Epi Info, a system of computer programs produced by CDC and the World Health Organization, providing public-domain software for word processing, database and statistics work in public health. WHAT'S NEW IN VERSION 2.0 Version 2 of Epi Map contains two major enhancements. It provides a complete system, including a small programming language, for creating "point-and-click" information systems, in which selecting a region on a map will display various types of geographically related information. The displays include text with hypertext features, other maps, and records in Epi Info data files. Version 2 is able to use Random Access Memory (RAM) above the 640 K limit usually imposed by DOS. It is able to load large files, such as the entire United States by county (USACOUNT.BND) on computers having 4, 8, or 16 megabytes of RAM. 4. Technical Support -------------------- Technical support for Epi Map may be obtained through the Epi Info/Epi Map Technical Support Hotline. CDC provides funding for the Hotline, currently run by TRW, Inc.. The Hotline may be reached at: Phone (404) 639-0840 FAX (404) 639-0841 E-mail EpiInfo@.CDC.GOV 5. How to Obtain Epi Map and Epi Info ---------------------------------- CDC employees may obtain Epi Map and Epi Info from the CDC Warehouse. Persons outside CDC may obtain copies of manuals and/or programs in English from the following sources (listed in order of increasing price): Please note that, to date, only USD, of the two suppliers mentioned below, provides Epi Map, but that this may change in the future, since both suppliers carry Epi Info. ------------------------------ Brixton Books PO Box 4398 The price is approximately London SW9 9XJ 7.50 pounds without disks United Kingdom and Brixton Books (North America) The U.S. price is $13 740 Marigny Street plus shipping, for the New Orleans, LA 70117 manual. Disks are U.S.A. an additional $3. FAX (504) 947-8899 The Brixton manual (for Epi Info) omits the portion of Chapter 32 giving the equations for the statistical calculations in CSAMPLE, but this will not be essential for most users. Otherwise the USD and Brixton versions are equivalent, except for differences in price and format. Quantity discounts offered by Brixton are: Single copy orders by individuals Full price Bookshops 35% discount Health Authorities and Teaching Institutions 1-4 copies Full price 5-19 copies 35% discount 20-29 copies 40% 50-99 copies 45% 100 or more copies 50% Institutions (working) in developing countries 1-4 copies Full price 5-20 copies 40% discount More than 20 copies 50% Purchase orders are accepted for orders of $150 or more. -------------------------- USD, Inc. 2075-A West Park Place Stone Mountain, GA 30087 U.S.A. (404) 469-4098 FAX (404) 469-0681 The Epi Info, Version 6, programs and manual are $50 (U.S., $65 outside the U.S.), including shipping. The Epi Info manual alone is $35. The Spanish version of Epi Info 5 is $38 ($48 outside the U.S.). Quantity prices may be negotiated with Mr. Robert Crowe of USD. Epi Map may be obtained from USD for $38. INTERNET INFORMATION Epi Map and Epi Info (most recent version of each) are available without charge on the Internet, using the following access information: FTP (File Transfer Protocol) Access Site: ftp.cdc.gov; UserID: anonymous; Password: logon id Directory for Epi Map: /pub/software/epi/epimap Directory for Epi Info: /pub/software/epi/epiinfo The compressed files occupy 3-4 megabytes for each product. WWW (World Wide Web) Access Address: http://www.cdc.gov/epo/epi/epi.html Files: EMAP2_1.EXE About 1.1 megabytes EMAP2_2.EXE About 1.3 megabytes EMAP2_3.EXE About 1.4 megabyte EMAP2_4.EXE About 1 megabyte These files are self-extracting archives. Obtain them via FTP in BINARY MODE, placing them in a directory from which you will install Epi Map (e.g., \EINSTALL; do NOT use \EPIMAP2). Execute all four .EXE files in this directory, which will produce a series of compressed files and INSTALL.EXE. Run INSTALL to install Epi Map, using the (I)nstall option. A directory called \EPIMAP2 will be created and Epi Map files will be decompressed and installed. The installation files may be kept for further installations (on diskettes or on a LAN) or deleted. To create a set of diskettes of any size or density (except for 360 KB), format the equivalent of four 1.44 megabyte diskettes, and run INSTALL using the (C)opy option. This will place the appropriate number of compressed files on the diskettes and prompt you to insert each as needed. 6. Boundary Files ----------------- Boundary files supplied with Epi Map are in the public domain, EXCEPT for those of US States by county, which are licensed only for distribution with Epi Map. If you give the US files to others, please be sure that a copy of Epi Map accompanies the boundaries. There are inaccuracies in some of the boundary files and they are intended for graphical displays only. Maps of many countries are missing and we ask users of Epi Map to fill in the gaps and provide better files for the entire community. It is our intention to distribute maps of the entire world by country, with boundaries shown down to the next level below country--state, province, canton, etc. If you are able to supply maps of a missing area for public distribution, or have corrected errors in existing boundary files, please send these to: Dr. Andrew G. Dean Epidemiology Program Office Mailstop C08 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Atlanta, GA 30333 U.S.A. They should be accompanied by a letter stating that the boundaries are not copyrighted and are intended for distribution in the public domain. We hope that Epi Map users everywhere will benefit from centralized collection and distribution of more detailed maps than are now available. If you have very detailed maps available, we would still like to refer interested users to you, but we may not be able to distribute them with every copy of Epi Map. Please provide a description of such files and instructions for obtaining them, but the actual files do not need to be sent to us. We will include the details in the README file for interested users who may wish to obtain them. 7. Printing the Help File/Manual -------------------------------- The entire 140+ page help file/manual is printable in ASCII format. You must first have chosen to install group 3--Utilities (BOUNDARY, help file/manual print module)--during the installation. Check whether BINDER.EXE is in directory EPIMAP2: If not, re-execute INSTALL and select group 3; If it is, do the following: a. type BINDER EPIMAP.HLP; b. press F5; c. set LINES PER PAGE; and d. press F5. The manual is also available on the Internet in Microsoft Word 6 format at ftp.cdc.gov. 8. Converting ArcInfo boundary files to Epi Map boundary files -------------------------------------------------------------- ARC_EPI.EXE is supplied with Epi Map (in Group 05). This utility will convert ArcInfo boundary files to Epi Map boundary files. Type "arc_epi" for help. (ARC_EPI was written by Alexander V. Shamanaev, Almaty, Kazakhstan.) 9. LAN notes -------------- If you install Epi Map 2 on a LAN it may be necessary to flag EPIMAP.HLP as SHARABLE (otherwise, the help file may not be available to multiple users). 10. Error in Printed Manual -------------------------- On page 36 of the printed manual (dated September 1995), the line near the middle of the page that reads send /1/m/o/cz8zr should read send /1/m/n/cz8zr This error has been corrected in the Help File/Manual, EPIMAP.HLP (dated 09/05/96 or later). NOTE: "/1" in the above SEND command should be changed to "/2" if your digitizer is connected to serial port COM2 rather than COM1. 11. File Groups -------------- By using the Install program on Disk1, you may install any or all of the following groups of files: INSTALL, EPIMAP, video drivers (*.BGI), README (Group 01) Archive: FILES01.EXE DPMI16BI.OVL EPIMAP.EXE Archive: BGI01.EXE ATT.BGI CGA.BGI EGAVGA.BGI HERC.BGI IBM8514.BGI PC3270.BGI NOTE: EGAVGA.BGI found in the Epi Map 2 directory (\EPIMAP2) is NOT INTERCHANGEABLE with EGAVGA.BGI found in the EPI6 directory and in the Epi Map 1 (\EPIMAP) directory.
